Net needles are indispensable in the assembly, repair and manufacture of nets. The yarn is wound tightly onto the needle, so the meter-long yarn does not have to be pulled completely through the mesh for every single knot. As needed, some yarn is wound off the needle so that the net needle passes easily through the mesh and there is still enough length to tighten the knot. Each fisherman should always carry a knife and a net needle wrapped with net yarn. Depending on the yarn diameter and mesh size, different sizes are used for netting.
